The Office of Career Services (OCS) offers a wide range of services, resources and programming for Mailman School students and alumni, including:
- Daily walk–in hours for quick answers to career planning and job search questions. The OCS also schedules individual appointments with matriculates and alumni to discuss career management issues in more depth and breadth.
- Cover letter and resume/CV critiques during scheduled appointments or on an ad-hoc drop-off basis.
- Departmental group workshops as well as OCS workshops on career development topics ranging from resume and cover letter development to interviewing and networking and other bread and butter career management topics, and alumni panels to orient students to the needs and demands of various industries and employers.
- A recent graduates database which matriculates and alumni can access directly for guidance on job functions, industries and/or employers.
- Reciprocal service arrangements with other Columbia University career centers as well as peer public health career centers nationwide.
- A Career Resource Center that features a seating area for students and alumni to review career materials and research employment opportunities; a career resource library with more than 140 references on career planning and the job search; personal computers for accessing the Career Services web pages and other pertinent web-based resources; and a copier and fax machine to facilitate job searches.
- A fall and a spring career day which attract 50-60 employers each, as well as on-campus information sessions and recruiting visits by employers.
- A local web-based job search engine and access to other important search engines through which matriculates and alumni can familiarize themselves with typical opportunities for which employers recruit public health students and identify job opportunities by job type function, industry and location.
- Web content on career development workshops and other OCS on-campus events, milestones in the career planning process and deadlines for career services activities as well as guidance on topics including employer research, networking, informational interviewing, job interviewing, cover letter, resume and CV development, thank you letters, job offers and the out-of- town search.
- Internship subsidies for students who accept career enhancing domestic and global internships.
- Staff support for students who pursue opportunities with prestigious post-graduate programs including: Presidential Management Fellowship Program, CDC Public Health Prevention Service Program, DHHS Emerging Leaders Program, ASPH/CDC Rosenfield Global Health Fellows Program and AJWS Public Health Fellows Program.
- A web-based search engine and access to other important search engines through which matriculates and alumni can familiarize themselves with typical opportunities for which employers recruit public health students and identify job opportunities by job type function, industry and location.
